Painful feelings are just that, painful.  We don’t like to feel the distress and discomfort, so we push them away and never fully process or release them. Many of us don’t adequately work through the difficulty or allow ourselves to acknowledge when we are feeling sad, overwhelmed, lonely, angry, hurt, afraid, depressed, vulnerable, etc.


When we feel uncomfortable expressing our feelings or feel uneasy just sitting with them, we use self-medicating substances to numb ourselves.


These addictions, such as food, alcohol, drugs, shopping, gambling or internet surfing are distractions to avoid the discomfort we are feeling. Glennon Doyle Melton, a recovered bulimic, alcoholic and drug addict says, “Addiction is a hiding place where sensitive people go so we can’t be touched by pain.”



She likens pain to a traveling professor. One that we should all invite in and spend time with. This discomfort is purposeful.  It is there to teach us what we need to know so that ultimately, we develop into our full potential as human beings.


Our energetic center of emotion, our Sacral chakra, is located two inches below your navel.  It is also our center of feeling, pleasure, passion, sensuality and creativity. Our second chakra typically resonates with the color orange.


Many of us were conditioned to ‘keep your feelings to yourself’ and ‘stop being so sensitive!’ But this creates a blockage in the Sacral chakra. This chakra is kept open by allowing our feelings, emotions, passions and creativity moving through it.


Using self-medicating substances, (which can ultimately turn into full fledge addictions) are a symptom that your Sacral chakra needs balancing.


In today’s Energy Healing Toolkit, I offer you a Sacral Chakra Balancing Exercise.  It is very important to keep this energy center open and flowing so that you can feel passion and drive in creative endeavors, rather than using unhealthy self-medicating behaviors to fill the void of not feeling these positive and healthy emotions.


And don’t forget…invite the pain in as it has something to teach you.

Energy Healing Toolkit Balancing Your Sacral Chakra


1) Sit in a comfortable position with your arms and legs uncrossed.


2) Take three deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.


3) Using your hand, touch your navel. Use a soft, circular clockwise motion as if you are winding in the energy of the affirmations while saying aloud:

*I acknowledge my feelings and allow them to move through me with ease. *My emotions are balanced. *I feel complete peace from within. *I am free from the need to reach for any self-medicating substances or acts to numb my feelings. *I am radiant, beautiful and strong and enjoy a healthy and passionate life. *I am a creative genius making an awesome contribution to this life. *I am nurturing myself with loving words and feelings.


4)  Repeat the clockwise motion while repeating the affirmations four or five times.


5) Close your eyes, breathe in orange light into your Sacral Chakra, feeling it expand with light.


6) Say aloud, “My Sacral chakra is now balanced and energized. And so it is.”
